I had Suno do cover versions of songs I wrote 20 and 30 years ago. I have been recording music since I was 14 and while many of the songs I recorded were good, the sound quality of my early recordings was terrible. I didn’t know what I was doing and I didn’t have YouTube or the internet to help me figure it out. Also, my first multi-track unit recorded to consumer cassette tapes with bounced down mono tracks. Click here for a history of my old gear.
Needless to say, I accumulated quite a few demos over the years. So, I picked about 60 songs to "Cover", and set out to get the best possible recordings of them that I could. I figured that doing it the traditional way would probably cost me around $45,000... so, that was a no go. Then a buddy of mine told me that an AI program called Suno could do cover versions of my songs. I had no idea what was going to happen, but I kept an open mind and forged ahead. Spoiler alert, I ended up using Suno and covered all of the songs, 5 albums' worth for 120 bucks.
The AI does not write the songs, chords, lyrics or melody. It literally does a cover of the song just like any artist would, using my drum part, my bass part, my guitar part, my keyboard parts, my lyrics and my vocal parts including harmonies, etc. as the basis for the song (To prove AI had nothing to do with writing, I will provide the copyright dates for all of the songs, some of which are 30+ years old... decades before AI even existed... and the demos.)
